Kantor's Philosophy of Education
As a child climbs new heights and searches the boundaries of life, a teacher should be there as a guide. It is my duty to be there with my students. I try to discover connections between the student and the curriculum that will create the most relevance for them. Students differ in ethnic heritage, social background, or economic status and we need to engage them in the act of learning. I must take it upon myself to try my best to recognize the individual and their values, strengths, and abilities in order to teach them well. It is important to make myself available to help, whether it is in the role of a tutor or simply as someone on hand to listen.
I must appreciate each learner's style and try to address it as much as I can, both in and out of the classroom. I have tried to incorporate activities that involve many different strategies incorporating active learning and cooperative learning with technology in my classroom, and these seem to have been beneficial for all students. By trying to use as many different methods as possible, I can hope to reach most, if not all, of my students.
I believe an ideal classroom as one that is student-centered. My relationship with the students will be shown through the characteristics of our classroom. Students are more open to learning if they are comfortable in the setting in which they are taught. It is important to decorate the room with the student's writing and projects. The students enjoy having their work displayed for others to see, and the presentation of their work is a constant reminder to me of how valuable quality, engaging work can be.
Overall, there must be a positive classroom environment for both students and teachers. It is important to focus on strengths instead of weaknesses in order to push students towards achieving the best that they can and reach out to new heights.

Why Choose Alan Kantor?
Hear from students who have experienced Alan's exceptional teaching and mentorship.
"I have learned with National Master Alan Kantor for several years during my elementary and middle school periods. He taught me at my learning disability elementary school, Churchill, and then for several years at my home. He taught me many of the fundamentals I use for my own play and lessons today, including the seven steps to evaluate a position. We have also remained in touch over the years as close friends. In 2007, we were teammates on the Championship team of the United States Amateur Team East."

"Alan has been my son's online chess teacher for the past two years, and we couldn't be more grateful. What my son appreciates most about Alan's teaching is his thoughtful, patient approach—he takes the time to go through every concept carefully and thoroughly. Whether it's a win or a loss, Alan always reviews games with my son to help him learn and grow. He is incredibly dedicated and consistently goes above and beyond. I was especially impressed when my son participated in a local chess tournament, and Alan drove two hours just to support him and analyze his games during the breaks. That level of commitment is rare and speaks volumes about his passion for teaching. Alan is also very active in the chess community, often organizing tournaments and encouraging my son to participate in major events. His enthusiasm and support have made a lasting impact, both on my son's skills and his love for the game."

"I started taking lessons with Alan in 2004 as an intermediate player. After a few months my US Chess rating started to increase. Alan really helped with creating a great foundation for my chess game. He even inspired me to teach others chess. I highly recommend Alan Kantor as a chess coach."
